Bach arr. Mozart: Prelude and Fugue in Eb for String Trio
James MacMillan: Tuireadh
Mozart: Clarinet Quintet
Scottish composer James MacMillan often uses events as inspiration for his work and in Tuireadh (Gaelic for lament), a piece dedicated to the victims of the Piper Alpha disaster and their families, he evokes a powerfully emotional and visceral response to the tragedy which goes to the heart of grief, using lament-forms from traditional Scottish music.
Written for the same combination of instruments, Mozart’s wonderful Clarinet Quintetradiates warmth and charm. At the beginning of this programme he pays homage to the great J.S.Bach in transcriptions of his Preludes and Fugues which occupy a cornerstone in Western classical music.
