Exquisitely restrained yet indescribably intense, Arvo Pärt’s Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi secundum Joannem is a modern masterpiece. This hour-long setting of St John’s Gospel draws upon some of the earliest settings of the passion story to reframe and distil its message for modern listeners. Interpolating passages for solo voices and choral ensembles, we are never far away from familiar passion territory and yet, with Pärt’s characteristic vocal candour and pared-down orchestration, it is a work that somehow remains timeless. We were delighted to join forces with the extraordinary vocal talents of Dunedin Consort in the beautiful surroundings of St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh, where we captured this performance.
Passio by Arvo Pärt is performed by arrangement with Universal Edition A.G. Wien.
We are thrilled to be making music together again and we are delighted to be able to share the performance with as many people as possible by making it available free of charge. Like many organisations, however, Hebrides has suffered from the lack of ticket income over the last year: if you would like to donate the cost of a ticket we would be extraordinarily grateful, and you can do so via PayPal or TotalGiving.
This video will be available for 30 days from Saturday 17 April, 7.30pm.
