November 2011 saw an extraordinary examination of some of the most pioneering talents in American music in the 20th century. Hebrides Ensemble presented a programme which highlights the unique craftsmanship of the Ives Piano trio, The darker world of George Crumb as exemplified by the Voice of the Whale, Steve Reichs’s New York Counterpoint, and John Adams’ Road Movies. To discuss the programme and attitudes towards contemporary composition, we brought together Hebrides Ensemble clarinettist Yann Ghiro, and the electronic music producer and composer Alex Smoke in a Glasgow Cafe.
